Billy Bloom is exactly how you may picture the son of a fabulous chanteuse played by Bette Midler. He's Hedwig meets Gaga with a hint of Oscar Wilde. "I didn't choose to be fabulous. Fabulous chose me," he says at one point. And we agree!
However, when his mother (Midler, in a brilliant cameo) leaves him in the care of his aloof father William (Larry Pine), he has to attend a new school where normcore is the norm, and he's absolutely not!He learns the hard way that the jocks and mean girls (lead by Abigail Breslin) are not his BFFs, although he does make the acquaintance of hot footballer Flip (Ian Nelson), which helps.
But for Billy, it's time to assert himself until his mum comes back for him. This quirky coming-of- age tale directed by Trudie Styler celebrates being yourself no matter the consequences. And in Billy Bloom we find the queer hero for our time.
