My Wonderful West Berlin

My Wonderful West Berlin
My Wonderful West Berlin

Rapturously received at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, My Wonderful West Berlin is a joyfully hedonistic mix of sex, art, and political activism.

Director Jochen Hick's affectionate, expansive documentary explores the highs and lows of the city's gay community over four decades; from the establishment of leather bars and transsexual drag cabaret, to the fight against Germany's infamous ‘paragraph 175', which criminalized homosexual acts between men, and the devastating effects of the AIDS crisis.

Rare archival footage, home movies, and intimate interviews bring to life the vibrancy of a time and place where being queer often meant marching for gay rights by day and hitting the clubs to rub shoulders with artists, punks - and maybe David Bowie - by night. My Wonderful West Berlin shines a light on a neglected history, showing the instrumental role queer culture played in shaking up staid, post-war Berlin and creating the cool, modern city of today.
