We’re thrilled to open with the Australian premiere of the delightful Irish film A Date for Mad Mary. Winner of the audience award at Gaze Film Festival in Dublin, and countless other festival awards, we are positive this will be a night to remember.
Mary has just been released from juvenile detention and she’s full of pent-up rage and frustration. Her family hardly seem thrilled at her return, and her BFF Charlene is consumed by wedding preparations and has given Mary the unfitting title of maid of honour. But soon Charlene isn’t returning her calls as Mary can’t stop getting into trouble.
Fiercely proud, she insists that she needs a plus one for the wedding, and begins the desperate hunt for someone to fit the bill. She signs up to a dating service, but the slim pickings leave Mary feeling uninspired.
Luckily, her wedding duties introduce her to Jess, a spunky photographer and singer who will be videotaping the wedding. While Mary isn’t the easiest to befriend, the pair click almost instantly, and their strong connection catches them both off guard.
With a perfectly honed sense of place and time, this is a touching, nuanced drama with moments of wry laugh-out-loud comedy, endearing characters, and a stunning performance by Seána Kerslake. She ensures "Mad" Mary stays with you long after the credits roll.
"Instantly lovable... beautifully performed, warm yet melancholic." – Variety
"A serious contender for best Irish release of 2016." – Irish Times
"Kerslake is extraordinary." – The Independent
"An accomplished film with authenticity and heart at its core. While a coming of age movie, it manages to skilfully avoid the clichés which viewers may have come to expect, offering a new and interesting perspective on the genre... Honest, human and genuine, A Date with Mad Mary is not one you’ll want to miss." – Film Ireland
