As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, let's go back and remember our history with one of the most important queer documentaries of our time, newly restored by the Australian National Film and Sound Archive.
This is the story of the very first Mardi Gras from those who were there on the night of the 24th June, 1978. Documenting the police brutality and the events and political action that unfolded afterwards, we hear from those directly affected, now proudly known as ‘the 78ers'.
In a time where we are still fighting for equality, this is a film to make us proud and angry and remind us why LGBTIQ activism is still needed.
