Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan star in the most talked-about lesbian film of the year, Ammonite.

Winslet plays the proud and independent Mary Anning, a once acclaimed palaeontologist now supporting herself and her ailing mother by selling fossils to tourists in the seaside town of Lyme Regis. When the rich and fragile Charlotte (Ronan) arrives with her husband, he leaves her in the care of the proud and independent Mary, who immediately sees Charlotte as a burden and nothing else.

But, against the backdrop of the wild southern English coastline, Mary and Charlotte’s initial dislike of one another develops unexpectedly, and culminates into a passionate love affair that will defy all social bounds and alter the course of both their lives.

Winner, SFFILM Festival 2020 Sloan Science in Cinema Prize

"It is a love story that is also a fascinating artefact: quixotic, romantic, erotic." — The Guardian
