Representing some of the best short films from the region, these Asian Pacific Queer Film Festival Alliance (APQFFA) shorts highlight queer characters performing defiant resistance against cultural norms in their own unique ways.

Alongside APQFFA Best Short Film 2019 winner A Gift (Kado), about a young Indonesian trans boy’s struggle to please societal expectations and feel comfortable in his own skin, it also includes a slow-burn romance between a Maharashtrian single mother and her son’s school teacher in U for Usha, and the heartfelt tale of a Taiwanese supreme court justice who receives a letter from her estranged son on the eve of an important vote in From the Other Side.

It also features Military Dog from Taiwan, about a submissive soldier caught up in a kinky relationship; The Booth from India, about two women having secret rendezvous in a mall security frisking booth; and Rani from Pakistan, about a trans woman who discovers an abandoned baby in the streets and vows to raise them despite society’s prejudices.
