This riveting documentary examines the pivotal, yet largely unknown chapter in queer history that saw gay liberation activists successfully overturn the US psychiatric profession’s classification of homosexuality as a mental illness.
Amongst an atmosphere of the civil rights, women’s and anti-war movements, a diverse group of crusaders with stubborn dedication and big personalities came together to bring about a change that transformed not only LGBTIQ+ people’s perceptions of themselves, but also the social fabric of America.
Using archival film and photos, recently discovered audio recordings as well as new interviews from those who lived through it, Cured presents a tightly paced chronicle of events, and the importance of activism in the process of social change.
Trigger warning: This film contains graphic images of past treatments doctors used to "cure" homosexuality
Australian Premiere
Winner, Frameline San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival 2020 Audience Award for Best Documentary
"Riveting... deserves its place alongside other seminal documentaries such as How to Survive a Plague, The Celluloid Closet, Before Stonewall and The Times of Harvey Milk." — The Queer Review
