Celebrated auteur of Taiwanese Second Wave cinema, Tsai Ming-liang is back with a captivating piece of observational cinema in Days (Rizi). A methodical, unsubtitled witnessing of two gay men in Bangkok. Both Kang and Non live alone and in vastly different circumstances, but their repression and loneliness drive them out and into each other’s arms.

Tsai’s unique eye is clear in this film, with long, meditative takes lingering on moments of isolation for the men and the eventual slow release of their sensuality and inhibition upon meeting. With gorgeous visuals and a stark, striking sound design, this is a perfect addition to the director’s oeuvre and one both for his existing and soon-to-be fans.

Once again working with actor Lee Kang-sheng, Tsai delivers a thoughtful, poetic exercise in cinematic contemplation sure to stay with you long after you leave the cinema.

Australian Premiere

Winner, Berlin International Film Festival 2020 Teddy Jury Award

"Days was a reminder of the profundity and the emotional eloquence of stillness and near silence: this is a film where you can sit at length marveling at the curve in a country road at night." — Film Comment Magazine
