First-time directors Fiona Dawson and Gabriel Silverman’s film TransMilitary deservedly won the Audience Award for Documentary Feature at 2018’s SXSW Film Festival.

Over 15,000 transgender people serve in the U.S military, making it the largest employer of transgender men and women in America. Despite this, transgender people continue to hide their gender identities because of regressive policies and institutionalised discrimination.

TransMilitary follows the lives of four transgender people serving in the US military. Over the course of several years, the film’s subjects fearlessly risk their careers and livelihoods by meeting with top defence officials in the hope of bringing about a reversal of America’s long-standing ban on transgender people in military service.

This timely and affecting film invites viewers to join Logan, Laila, El and Jennifer as they campaign for equality in the face of political and institutional adversity. TransMilitary is an engaging and illuminating documentary not to be missed.
