Silvana charts the meteoric rise of Swedish rapper Silvana Imam. An intoxicating mix of raw footage, home videos and interviews, it follows Silvana as her single hits number one and she’s thrust into the queer celebrity spotlight, a responsibility she’s not quite prepared for.
The film also focuses on the unfurling love affair between Silvana and pop sensation Beatrice Eli as they become Sweden’s queer power couple. Inspiring and unapologetic, their impact on young queers is echoed in the faces of die hard fans.
Self-described as ‘Sweden’s super dyke’, she raps about punching fascists, opening borders and being queer. At a time of amped up neo-fascist political resurgence in Sweden, this documentary is timely - Silvana’s inspiring indignation is palpable. A fierce feminist force, her vulnerability, openness, and connection to community make this documentary both enthralling and important. Silvana wants her ideas, and not herself, to take centre stage.
