Director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) is renowned for his twisted tales, and a very distinctive approach to filmmaking, and he’s done it again, offering up a historical biopic like no other.
His subject is Queen Anne (played imperiously and hilariously by Olivia Colman), and when the story picks up we find the monarch having an illicit affair with Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), however the arrival of Abigail (Emma Stone) disturbs the apple cart when she starts vying for the queen’s affection herself. The power plays and conflicting passions between these three women becomes in turns shocking, funny and moving. (This is a movie that passes the Bechdel test with flying colours.)
With Lanthimos behind the camera, an incredible trio of lead actresses having a ball, and a razor-sharp script (co-written by Australian Tony McNamara) the critically acclaimed The Favourite is truly something special.
"Featuring a trio of the best performances of the year, The Favourite is a roiling tale of deception, sex, twisted friendship and power." - The Film Yap
