Fleeing persecution in their home countries, four young queer people face uncertainty as they touch down in the USA just as the anti-immigration debate heats up.
The four arrive as refugees in San Francisco to seek asylum in the United States. Fleeing constant harassment and threats – from strangers, acquaintances, neighbours, friends and loved ones alike – is the only option for Syrian gay man Subhi, gender non-conforming Junior (the Democrat Republic of Congo) and lesbian couple Cheyenne and Mari (Angola).
Yet their future in the land of the free is far from certain. They touch down as Donald Trump turns up the anti-immigration heat. Seeking asylum takes years and at times they struggle with basic human needs (food, shelter and income), not to mention loneliness and isolation.
Acclaimed documentary maker Tom Shepard unpacks their stories with care and it’s impossible not to be shattered by the lows and delighted by the highs they experience. Unsettled provides an opportunity to bear witness to the lives of the people who are conspicuously absent from politics.
