Winner of multiple awards including the World Cinema Dramatic Jury Prize at Sundance,
Cactus Pears is a tender, slow-burn romance told with subtlety and care.
Following his father’s death, Mumbai call-centre worker Anand returns to his rural hometown for a ten day mourning period. Out to his parents but not his extended family, he dodges questions about when he plans to marry. He finds solace in childhood friend Balya during daily outings to herd goats, reconnecting over shared familial and societal pressures. Against the scenic mountains their simmering chemistry becomes undeniable, but is there a future together as Anand’s departure looms?
Writer-director Rohan Parashuram Kanawade’s (
U for Usha, MGFF20) semi-autobiographical feature debut is a beautifully meditative work of arthouse cinema. Drawing on his own experience with grief, it was shot in the village where his mother was born and raised using only local actors. Embracing the aesthetics of slow cinema and nuanced storytelling, it offers a refreshing and hopeful perspective on lower socio-economic queer representation in India.
