Young people on the Wind River reservation in Wyoming face limited options, suffering from systemic issues that thwart marginalised communities and indigenous women in particular. Despite this, Sharmaine, one of the few lesbians on the reservation, is determined to become a champion in the extreme, male dominated world of Native American bareback horse racing.
Pure Grit is the thrilling tale of Sharmaine’s journey as it chronicles three years of her life, capturing how her unwavering determination and the relationships that sustain her, propel her to success. To become a champion she’ll have to overcome physical, familial and societal challenges to achieve her ambitions. A ground-breaking, optimistic documentary that highlights the power of self determination and cultural connection when living life on the fringe.
Content Warning: Themes of suicide and sexual abuse. Scenes of animals being hunted and slaughtered.
Australian Premiere
2021 Galway Film Fleadh - Documentary Award Best Irish Feature Documentary
2021 Newport Beach Film Festival - Achievement Award Best Editing Documentary Feature
